Week 8 Mid Week Question
Now that you have had a chance to learn about mashups, sit back and think about the future of mashups and libraries.

I thought that I had completed the course on Tuesday, and then noticed this question!
Mashups and libraries - well, our library is using it for obvious things, such as listing the 99 library branches on a Google map. This is an obvious, but very helpful way to impart directional information. For example, it could be used to plot a list of consumer health information centres across Canada.
Libraries can use it to bring life to certain aspects of collections, such as a walking tour of where famous and/or local writers lived or once lived. I’m sure there are many other innovatove ways that libraries already are using mashups.

I think these internal search set-ups are pretty cool, except isnt it just a copy of a google search with the complications of adding your licensed databases into them? Sort of like reinventing the search. On the other hand wouldnt it be nice if all the vendor’s databases were searched the same with excellent results!
At this point in time the time factor of creating all these cool things is not the problem, the upkeep is!

Considering the heavy use of databmining, I would think at least understanding this technology is necessary just for self protection. Look at various government data mining actions of late. Look at the way that your rewards credit card is combined with other data to deliver targeted advertisements. Look at the way GIS was able to revolutionize both the visualization of databases (spatial rather than value or character) and combine data to provide greatly added value.
At this point, the tools seem rather primitive. But as an example of even the value of this primitive data conflagration, go to your favorite hotel reservation travel site and search for a hotel room and see how helpful it is to have the hotel locations shown on a common map. Or go to a super-search travel site (like kayak.com) and see if you can get better travel deals because you can compare data from different sites.

Just thought I’d add - if anyone wants to try their hand at Mashups, there are a couple of ways to do so without directly using APIs. You may want to look at Yahoo Pipes and also at Open Kapow ( http://openkapow.com/ ) as ways to start your own datamining.

It is taking me awhile to catch on to mashups - I believe mashups are very important application(s) for libraries– since it can be so visually oriented, the combination of visual and local interest, is a powerful attraction for contemporary patrons.

It’s interesting to me that each week we’re asked a question along the lines of, “how can you use this technology?” Now, obviously someone created each Web 2.0 technology solution as exactly that - a solution - to a particular problem or problems. But if we have to think too hard about how we’d use a technology - then obviously we don’t really have that problem and it isn’t an actual solution.
A class that would be interesting to me would go about it from the opposite direction. Let’s all sit down at a table and talk about problems we currently have that we think might have technology solutions. Then let’s figure out if a technology already exists. If not, let’s figure out what we need in terms of expertise, dollars, capital, time, to create the solution. Sometimes looking at existing technologies adds things on to our to do-lists (oh, I just thought of a new way to market, do outreach, do reference, whatever) but we still have the existing problems.

It is funny how you use sites and do not even realize that you are using a Mashup or other tools incorporated into a website. It really is amazing to see how far technology and web based resources have come along since the Gopher, and Mosaic days.
As for the use of a Mashup, I think a library would really have to consider whether or not to use it. As some of the posters already pointed out, it is a time consuming process in some respects, and unless it serves a function that enhances delivery of service or information, I do not necessarily think it is a tool that every library needs to use.

I really really want to do a mashup with my library catalog and Amazon to get the book covers and Publisher descriptions into the catalog. My catalog vendor does not make their APIs available, though.

What a course! Although alternatingly intimidating and fascinating, this course certainly introduced new ways of using the web and incredible new tools to mine for iand share information. I am not fluent in these technologies, of course, but I can now feel that I know what they are and how they can be used for libraries. Thank you to all the instructors!

i wish that i had more time to digest all the information…the authors who have synthesized above cover important points…time involvment, i love marcybrown’s suggestions of creting something to fix a problem or make something better…all of the products we looked at are attempting to do that in our electronic digital world. I was also all excited to try openkapow but it’sonly windows/linus based. darn!

Mashups are just a scary name for things we’ve already been using and not even realizing it. I think the role of libraries is making the most information available to users and finding, evaluating and supporting the use of these tools. I get new links in my box constantly, this morning I found http://wildlifedisease.nbii.gov/ which will be an excellent addition to our resource list. It involves information on wildlife health with geographic location. Viewing the info as presented gives an entirely new dimension to the numbers and will be a powerful tool for our researchers when addressing related issues. I’d love to explore creating my own mashups but for right now I’m learning about ones that already exist.

Margaret, do I understand that you’re a Mac person ?
You probably already have tried this. But it not:
If so, look for an operating system emulator for your Mac. My guess is that a Linux emulator should be available fairly easily and cheaply as the newer Mac OS is based on BSD Unix.

First, let me say all my comments are late, since my pacing for this course is different then most. I am working backwards on the topics, at this point. Mashups was an interesting section for me. It’s all about Fresh reinvention or creation–some thing I think some librarians are at odds with. For instance, I work in a medical library where this one librarian constantly uses that chalk board sentence, “why reinvent the wheel.” As a new librarian I always found that sentence irksome and defeating. Now I take that sentence with a grain of salt. There are some great things already out there for reference librarians like myself to use in assisting users, but there is much reinvention needed because of the way users learn, the type of users librarians now encounter and so forth. I truly believe that and that is part of the reason why I have decided to buckle down and get some insight from this course and my peers. Mashups are fun and allows users to own library content-arranging things as they like and thinking about what is important to them to for their studies. They can build their own toolkits with Mashups rather than subscribe to some pre-defined ones from librarians. Okay, there are two sides to every story. For every creative offering we can provide users, especially young library users there is a plus and minus and this has to continue to come into play as we decide which Web technologies to incorporate. While look on the web I cam across this article and originally did not know if I could get beyond the title to read it, but I did. Take a look. One of my biggest problems with Web 2.0 technology is lack of filters or direction for how to verify information and lack of data ownership and security.
